VW Gearbox Replacement

When you have a faulty VW gearbox that is out of manufacturer's warranty, there are generally three options open:

  1. Pay for your gearbox to be repaired
  2. Buy a reconditioned gearbox
  3. Buy a quality used gearbox

The main consideration here, is where you get the most value in terms of price, quality and warranty.

When a gearbox is faulty, the cause can be expensive to repair.  So much so that it could be beyond economical repair. Often quotes for repair will only include "soft part" and not "hard parts", soft parts include major overhaul kit, clutches and bands, bushings & torque converter, however with the wide range of transmissions used in VW Vehicles, they differ from model to model, items such as clutch drums, planetary gear sets, oil pumps are known as hard parts and can be extremely costly. Hard parts can not be pre-quoted as these parts can not be examined until the transmission is disassembled, cleaned and examined for wear, all this means a costly repair bill for parts and labour. Warranty is for repair work only not for the complete gearbox.

In these cases, you will be considering a reconditioned unit or a quality used gearbox.

Reconditioned gearbox companies will often request an exchange unit, this means if the casing has a hole in, or other major failure, they will not sell you a reconditioned unit unless you pay a premium surcharge. It stands to reason that a reconditioned gearbox that has been economical to repair and as such, the fault was relatively simple to remedy  Of course, this means that the expensive components may well still be an accident waiting to happen.  A warranty will be offered and will often have a milage limit attached to the warranty, also the premium will have been paid for the work carried out on the gearbox.  And remember, there will have been something wrong with the gearbox and the faulty parts may well have been replaced from another exchanged and potentially faulty gearbox.

A quality used gearbox will have been tested prior to removal, tested after removal and tested again prior to despatch or collection.  The vast majority our vehicles arrive to us due accidental damage, or because something else went wrong with the vehicle, leaving a perfectly good gearbox available for re-sale. A  used gearbox is more economical than a repaired or reconditioned gearbox because there was no parts or labour involved in the sale. Also we do not ask for your faulty gearbox back, which we consider to be reassuring.

So with a free 90 warranty, or an extended years warranty available, this is the most cost effective option that delivers assurance.
