VW Alloy Wheel Fitment Guide
Buying used VW Alloys over new can obviously have huge savings, but the jargon that surrounds wheel fitment often confuses people. There are a few considerations to think about when buying replacement rims, we have broken down the jargon and given you a VW Alloy Wheel fitment guide to help you buy with confidence, of coarse if you are still unsure we are always here and ready to help answer your questions.
Breaking down the jargon:
Models and years You will see from our guide below, that your cars year also has the same or similar PCD, ET and Bore as other models, so fitting alloys from another VW model or year range will be easier to identify.
Wheel size The J size is the depth measurement or the width, whilst the diameter is the circumference measurement, both measurements are in inches; i.e 14 x 5J is 14 inches in height (without the tyre) by a depth of 5 inches wide. It is important to consider wheel size for clearance of your suspension and the body or arches of you vehicle.(lowered suspension will also require additional considerations, such as the use of low profile tyres when bigger rims are to be fitted)
PCD This means `pitch circle diameter`, but is the spacing between each wheel bolt that is measured in millimeters. Of coarse the number of bolts or wheel studs you have is quite important to note, unless your intending to fit adapters. ( Adapters allow you to fit a four bolt rim to a five bolt for example) So for example if you had 5 x 100 stamped between your wheel bolts or underside of your rim, your car has 5 bolts/studs with 100mm spacing between each bolt/stud.
ET Is an abbrieviation for the German word Einpresstiefe, translated means Inset depth. Most people refer to the ET as the offset which is the distance in millimeters between the fixing face and the centre line of the rim. The offset can be neutral, positive or negative. Typically you can go 5mm-7mm difference from that of the manufacturers specifications before fouling the suspension or body work or affecting the cars handling. (Spacers can also be used to change the offset of your wheel, a spacer fits between the hub and wheel, spacers subtract your ET size, i.e. fitting a rim with ET 55 and a spacer of 15mm would give you an offset of 40)
Bore This is the centre hole in the wheel. The bore hole has to fit over the central hub. You can fit rims that have a bigger bore when using adapter rings.
So now you understand the jargon, you can use this handy fitment guide below with knowledge and confidence.
